A fallen tree blocked a busy Southampton road and caused traffic chaos for drivers though the area this morning.

Pictures sent in by eyewitnesses show the fallen tree blocking part of West End Road in Southampton.

It is believed that the tree fell during the early hours of Wednesday morning, at around 3.40am, and buses and trucks were seen turning in the road as it had been blocked by the tree.

Hampshire Police confirmed that a road closure was put in place at about 5am, before officers then handed the incident over to the highways authority at Southampton City Council, which has since reopened the road at around 8.20am after clearing the tree.
