Resident concerned after tree crushes van in Cranbury Place

A green van belonging to FM Conway, an infrastructure services provider, was damaged on Wednesday morning after the large tree fell onto the road in Cranbury Place. 

The vehicle was parked in one of the bays opposite homes but luckily no one was injured and the owner of the van was not in the area at the time. 

Members of Southampton City Council's tree teams attended the residential street at around 11am to clear the debris. 

One resident, Brian Wright, has said this isn't the first time this kind of thing has happened on this street.

He told the Echo: "This is not the first time this has happened. It was only in the storms about six months ago when one came down on a brand-new Audi. 

"There was no wind last night was there? It (the fallen tree) is totally dry. 

"I wouldn't be surprised if they come along and take them all down.

"All the gaps are where trees have come down."

Brian said he has been living in the street for around 30 years, adding that it would be a shame if the trees were taken down. 

"I think they really make the street. It would be a pity. 

"The street is very much like North London. Safety has got to come first but my preference would be to keep them as long as possible."

Council workers used chainsaws and a heavy-duty wood chipper to clear the debris away.

Branches had also been scattered across the road after it disintegrated when it hit the road. 

The road remained closed throughout the morning but reopened at around 2pm. 

A council spokesperson said on Wednesday: “We are aware of the fallen tree on the vehicle at Cranbury Place.

"The Trees Supervisor is currently on site, with a tree team on their way to clear it.

"We will provide a further update once the road is opened.”
